RV Secrets: Reversing Parking with the ReverseMate

Reverse parking is not as terrifying as you might think.

Even if you are a casual RV owner, you might not be comfortable driving a large vehicle. This won’t be a problem most of the time. Even the most inexperienced can coax these gentle giants along with a little bit of caution and a ReverseMate.  To ensure your RV is able to be parked wherever you are, you will need to be comfortable reversing. Although it may seem daunting to perform these maneuvers in an RV, once you learn the tricks of RV reverse parking with the ReverseMate, you will soon be able to park your RV anywhere you want.

Keys to reversing an RV

  • It is a good idea to evaluate a space before you drive in. If you are unable to reverse your RV into the space.
  • You should make sure all curtains are securely closed in your RV. Visibility is crucial for successful reversing. Make sure nothing blocks your vision.
  • It may be necessary to get out of your RV in order to inspect the space behind you. This is especially important if you are reversing out from a space. Although it may seem like a hassle, it can help prevent some extremely unfortunate and unneeded accidents from ever occurring.
  • You can also make a spotter for a passenger if you are travelling together. This method is more efficient than using reversing cameras. You must be able to see the spotter through your mirrors. If you lose sight of them, you should stop until they are found. It is also helpful to be able to hear and understand their hand signals. Coordinate beforehand to ensure that there are no communication problems.
  • Don’t get too caught up in the rear of your vehicle, especially if the RV is being swung around to fit into a spot.
  • You can swing around in a circle and then reverse into a park by making a wide turn. This will allow you to get into a more straight backing position.
  • Be sure to check for tree branches and other obstacles that could cause obstructions when you reverse.
  • A three-point turn is a good idea, but don’t be afraid to try ten points when you start out. As long as you get the right angle at the end, a three-point turn might be the best.

All these tips can help you master reversing, but practice is the only way to get better. This means that you will need to make excuses for yourself to travel on more RV adventures to “make sure you have the technique down”.
